2018 Conference Attendee

Founder + Managing Partner
CEO + Co-founder, Backstage Capital

Arlan Hamilton built a venture capital fund from the ground up, while homeless. She is the Founder and Managing Partner of Backstage Capital, a fund that is dedicated to minimizing funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are of color, women, and/or LGBT. Started from scratch in 2015, Backstage has now invested nearly $5m into 100 startup companies led by underestimated founders.

Co-founder and former President, Zume Pizza, Inc., Founder, and CEO of Planet Forward Ventures

In 2015, Julia co-founded Zume Pizza, Inc. and serves as President of Zume Pizza, Inc. Zume is a technology-enabled food company whose mission is to make healthy food fast and accessible to every single person on earth. Zume’s patented cooking en-route technology makes it the first company to successfully cook pizza while it is being delivered to the customer so that the pizza arrives at the peak of flavor and freshness with no added sugar or harmful chemicals. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Julia Collins received her BA from Harvard College in 2001 and her MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2009. She lives in San Francisco with her partner Tremayne and their son Mosi.

Founder and CEO, Moore Haircare,
Founder, Moore Vision Media

Kenya Moore is the triple threat with beauty, brains, and talent. Originally from Detroit, the former psychology major left Michigan with fierce drive and determination to build her own unique brand. She is well-known for being crowned “Miss USA” and has also acted alongside many “A-list” celebrities.

Now, Kenya is looking to grow her production company, Moore Vision Media, as well as launch a new business venture, Moore Hair Care. She is relentless in her pursuit of happiness and is laser focused on having it all…but on her own terms.

FAQ Section ONE

Is the conference only for black women founders?

It’s not! While the first day is for black women founders, the second day is open to everyone!

Where is the Founders Retreat?

ACE Hotel – 20 W 29th St, New York, NY 10001

What are the differences between the three days?

The first two days are geared towards the founders of scalable tech companies with workshops that will help them grow their business into billion dollar companies. The third day is for everyone and highlights the incredible work being done in tech.

What are the requirements for attending founder’s day?

You must identify as a black woman and have a scalable company. We have requirements for the first day because the content is refined specifically for people who fit this description and because they will be interacting with investors and media who are looking for these types of founders.

What do you consider a scalable or tech company?

We define scalable as a company where the hours worked doesn’t directly equal the revenue created and full time as 40 hours a week. This typically does not include consulting, agencies, brick and mortar retail or blogs.

When will I know if my founder ticket is approved?

If you believe you fit the above requirements, you can purchase a founder’s ticket immediately. We will be reviewing all tickets and if you do not fit the requirements, you will be refunded within a week of purchasing.

How do I get considered for the Pitch Competition, Black Girl Magic Talks, Founder Booth or Fellowship?

After you purchase a founder’s ticket, you will receive a follow up email to apply for these opportunities, which are only available to those attending the conference. You will be contacted closer to the conference if you’ve been chosen for any of these opportunities.

How do I apply for the pitch?
When you purchase a founder’s ticket, you will receive the application to pitch.

Who is eligible for the pitch?
Any tech or scalable company at any stage run by a black women founder is eligible to pitch.

What are the rules for the pitch?
10 finalists will be chosen from the application pool. Finalists will have to attend an online pitch training prior to the event and submit their pitch materials beforehand. On March 1st, finalists will pitch on stage for 3 minutes in front of our judges. Judges will choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and will also allot prizes to all the other finalists.

What are the requirements for a student ticket?

To purchase a student ticket, you must buy it with a student email and provide a profile that confirms you are a student. The student tickets are only available for access to Day 2 and do not apply to the founder’s day. If after review, we find a student pass has been purchased without proper validation, it will be refunded.

Can I get a refund?

The only refunds that will be given are for founders or students who do not fit the proper requirements. Otherwise, there are no refunds on any passes and founder passes are non-transferable.

Do you have a hotel block or travel discounts?

Yes, we have a hotel block and travel discounts which can be accessed through our travel partner, Upside. When you spend $500 in travel on their site, you’ll get $100 in gift cards. Click the link above and fill out a profile to get more information.

Are you still accepting sponsors?

Yes, we are still accepting sponsors for the conference. Please reach out to us at to discuss open opportunities.

Can I attend as press?

Yes, we have press passes. Please reach out to us at if interested.
